The electronics supply chain’s tail end: disposal and management of e-waste

Smaltimento e Gestione dei Rifiuti Elettronici

In the digital age in which we are living, technological innovation is evolving at an extraordinary speed. However, there is a dark side to this growth: electrical and electronic waste equipment (WEEE) generation. Electronic devices that quickly become obsolete or are no longer functional represent an increasingly serious global environmental problem. One of the most critical aspects is the disposal of electronic boards and the management of the materials contained in these devices.

The environmental problem of electronic waste

Electronic boards are essential components. They are contained everywhere: in most household and professional appliances we use such as refrigerators, coffee machines, washing machines, smartphones, kitchen equipment, computers and so on. All these tools contain inside them printed circuit boards, transistors, microchips and other components that enable them to function properly.
With planned obsolescence and rapidly changing technologies, the average lifespan of electronic devices is shortening. The life cycle of many products has become shorter and shorter. Old devices are often replaced with new ones long before they become unusable. This leads to a significant increase in technological waste and an environmental problem.

The relevance of recycling electronic boarde

Among the various components of technological waste, electronic circuit boards play a crucial role. These circuit boards are found in almost all electronic devices and contain valuable materials such as gold, silver and copper, but also toxic substances such as boron, beryllium, lead, cadmium and mercury. When they are not disposed of properly or end up in landfills, these materials can leach into soil and water, affecting the surrounding ecosystem.
Recycling circuit boards is essential to make the most of these valuable materials and reduce the need to extract new natural resources. In addition, recycling of circuit boards helps prevent the release of harmful substances into the environment during possible inappropriate disposal.

The disposal and recycling of electronic boards and technological waste

Proper disposal of technological waste starts with recycling. Many components of electronic devices can be separated, recovered and reused.
Recycling electronic boards is a complex process that requires advanced technical skills and the use of specialized technologies. The first stage involves the collection of obsolete electronic equipment. The equipment is disassembled and the circuit boards are removed. Next, the various materials are sorted by chemical or physical processes. The valuable materials, after being refined and purified, can be reused for the production of new devices or as new raw materials. Residual or hazardous materials are disposed of safely and in conformity with environmental regulations.
